Lacewing School Project Kit
this page and more information will soon be available for download
The Lacewing Kit has been designed to introduce school children to the concepts of insect reproduction, as well as how to manage pests in an environmentally friendly way.
Kits include approximately 100 Green Lacewing eggs, and come with a food supply that can be fed to the Lacewing larvae to enable students to watch them develop into adults.
The types of information the kit can be used to demonstrate includes:
- Insect development – the kit contains eggs, which hatch into larvae, then pupae and finally into adult Lacewings
- Pest control – the kit comes with moth eggs as a food source, but other insects such as aphids can be introduced to show how Lacewings can control these pests
- Environmental studies – use the kit to explain biological cycles, or the impact of pesticides on the environment
Caring for your Lacewings
Instructions on how to look after the Lacewings will be included with the Kits. The main things to remember are to keep them out of direct sunlight, and feed them every 2 to 3 days.
Lacewings & IPM
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) relies on a range of activities to manage pest levels, including cultural activities, using good bugs and as a last resort using a soft chemical option.
IPM does not aim to eliminate al pests, as this is neither natural nor desirable. IPM seeks to achieve a balance between all organisms in the garden. A balance of pests and beneficial insects is the sign of a healthy garden.
Detailed information on IPM is included with the Lacewing Kit.
